THE DEFINITION OF A BREAKDOWN

A "breakdown" is a 'normally' emotion-laden term, defined as "a failure to work or function properly", which simply means that our actions did not produce the intended result.

If we were a baby learning to walk, we would have all sorts of 'breakdowns.'  And we would get up each time and try again, without being upset about it.

A "breakdown" is simply the adult version of learning to do something and falling down, figuratively, in the process and the breakthrough is "getting back up" to try again.  But if one is in a victim mode, one stops getting up and just goes to bed.

AND WHAT WE ADD TO IT

As "grown ups", we have learned to add a connotation of "that's bad" or "I'm screwed" because of it (the latter a "victim" view), which is the opposite of what is learned for one to achieve Fearlessness (which is the condition of choosing to be happy no matter what).

Another thing we have added, which is an incredible internal mind-game of no benefit, is to experience an upset over not having achieved something we expected (or hoped) to have, even if we didn't do anything to achieve it.  An example is when we set up an unrealistic expectation of our intimate partner that he/she "should" do what we believe they "should" do, and if they don't, we get "upset" - not a good sign for a relationship!  (See that section.)

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD

If we become an "enlightened" grown-up, then we simply

1.  Observe that we didn't get what we wanted
2.  Reaffirm what we want to get and
3.  Reaffirm that it is worth the effort
4.  See if we can glean any lessons and/or causes from and of the breakdown, and
5.  Then figure out what to do and
6.   Do it.

There is no "upset", though there might be a little bit of disappointment (if one is not yet at the pure enlightenment level of white light).

When we remove the crappola from our beliefs about breakdowns, we end up with the old tried and true sequence:

WHAT’S SO         -->           SO WHAT?            -->       NOW WHAT?
(Observe)                      (Put it in perspective)                      (Ask)

THE DEFINITION OF A BREAKTHROUGH

If one "folds" their tent when he/she has a breakdown, then one will not progress.
A breakdown simply indicates one has a "not yet knowing", which simply means, as the saying goes, "we now have a learning opportunitiy".  (See Mistakes, Failures, And Defeats - Acceptable, Necessary, And Workable!

And if we do the learning, we then can create a possibility of breakthrough from that new learning.  And that might fill a blindspot or a missing that would have otherwise held us in a lower level of operating for a considerable time.

A breakthrough is defined as "an act, result, or place of breaking through against resistance" or a barrier of, or due to, ignorance.

At the smallest level, it offers an opportunity for us to discover what we 'didn't know to do' that resulted in not getting the intended or expected result.  Obviously, there is somethng to learn!  (Duh!)

Sometimes, the breakthrough meets the second definition: "a strikingly important advance or discovery', which could range anywhere from an epiphany all the way to replacing a very limiting belief with a new one, such that extraordinary results are possible and/or occur.

ANOTHER MEANS OF CREATING A BREAKTHROUGH

We do not, in my estimation, need a breakdown to have a breakthrough, though breakdowns do tend to create a clear opportunity for such.  A breakthrough can occur when we are simply seeking some a new result that we haven't been able to achieve, such as in our thinking, and we discover it simply through the learning/inquiry/training process - that is what we are attempting to help create for you on this site (or at least set you up so you are ready for it from another source and are capable of recognizing it or integrated it with what you've learned from this site.

Brainstorming in a group form or by oneself, perhaps using the Challenge - 20 Ideas approach can also be useful for creating breakthroughs.

Dramatic breakthroughs can occur when one shifts one's viewpoint from that of Victimhood To Responsibility , and a sub-part of that is to shift from the belief or view that you are operating from your internal child to choosing to operating as a rational, nurturing adult

May you have many breakthroughs and slide seamlessly through the inevitable part of life where we experience breakdowns!
